A YOUNG boy who called 999 when he saw a blaze in his next door neigbour's camper van has been rewarded for his quick thinking with a trip in a fire engine and a certificate.

Joe Bush, aged seven, of Cornmeadow Lane, Claines, not only notified the emergency services of the flames, but also went round his own house and closed all the windows to stop smoke entering the property.

As a result of the Northwick Manor School's pupil's rapid reactions, the fire damage was limited to the van, and didn't spread to his parents or neighbours' homes.

Proud mum Clare said: "He had a talk at school earlier in the year about fire safety and Joe remembered everything. He is a very sensible boy and just took action."

A crew from Worcester Fire Brigade visited Joe to say well done. They spent time talking about the job they do and took him for a spin in one of their engines. He was presented with a specially made certificate congratulating him on being so aware.

A spokesman for the brigade said: "Joe was an absolute star. Not only did he do everything he had been taught, but he even made the firemen a jug of orange squash to drink after they had finished.

"He made their day and so they thought it would be nice to make his and show their appreciation. As well as giving him a certificate and a ride in a fire engine, they also gave him a bag of goodies."

The experience has now encouraged Joe to join the emergency service when he is older.

The youngster said: "I like everything about being a fireman. I really liked the drive in the fire engine and I want to drive one when I grow up."

It seems that he is already well on his way to achieving that ambition.
