BALLOT: My haunted mattress keeps me up all night

A MAN is seeking help for his haunted house after months of sleepless nights.

Kevin Cartwright believes he has been haunted by a number of spirits in his flat and is desperate to have them exorcised so he can get to sleep.

The 56-year-old, who lives on Infirmary Walk, Worcester, says he has had more than 135 nights where he has felt spirits pushing his mattress while he is lying on it, and is hoping someone can come forward and help.

He said: “I am very happy where I live and it is a lovely old property. But since I returned from a holiday to see my children in Canada in September last year, it has felt like someone or something is in my mattress.

“It’s hard to explain and people think I’m crazy when I tell them, but it feels as if they are pushing it. It is driving me mad that I just can’t get a full night’s sleep.”

Mr Cartwright has had eight friends test his bed and four of them have had a similar experience, with some of them feeling very scared.

He said: “It can’t just be me if others have felt it. While four said they didn’t feel anything, four did.

"I just don’t think I can stand this much longer. It is driving me mad.”

A family member recommended a visit from three ‘sensitives’ – people who claim to be in tune with the spirit world – who said they could help him.

They told Mr Cartwright they could sense the spirits were children, and not to be afraid of them as they were playing. Since their visit he believes most of the spirits have now left, except for one.

Mr Cartwright lives next to an old school building, and the women said they believed recent building work nearby may have disturbed the spirits.

Mr Cartwright said: “Before, it did feel like there were several spirits in my mattress, but now there is just one.

"I have had more than 135 nights of this and it’s just lunacy. I need help.

“I survive on a disability allowance and have bought a new mattress, and also an electric blanket as someone suggested that it may help, but it’s still not working.”

An ex-restaurant owner, Mr Cartwright, who survived a brain tumour in 2004, is registered disabled but volunteers with a number of charities throughout the city.

“If there is someone from the science or spiritual world who wants to help, please come forward,” he said.

I think there's a very good chance that Mr Cartwright's unfortunate illness from 2004 may have something to do with it.

Mr Cartwright said "it’s just lunacy. I need help."

I could not agree more.

I wonder if these "sensitives" recommended return visits and at a specified amount of dosh...

Sorry - is this news? No, seriously, come on... you can imagine a story like this turning up in The Sport or Viz!

Most "hauntings" turn out to be the result of infra-sound causing feelings of unnease, or barely noticable vibrations that cause noticable movement when they are amplified through resonance.

Well done Mr Cartwright, I'm impressed. I tried persuading 8 'friends' to try my bed out but they all turned me down. I'll try the 'ghost' story next time and see if I get better results.

LOL!!
So 8 people tried the bed and 4 felt something and 4 didn't and as I write this 50% of people in the poll believe in ghosts and 50% don't. Could it be that the results of the 'experiment' just reflect people's belief in ghosts?!

Why would building work by a nearby old school building disturb the 'spirits' ? Surely if I was a spirit, I wouldnt hang around at school! I always thought the spirits were where they lived, or where they died, not where they might have spent a few years at school.
And the 4 out of 8 poll is in fact not even 50%, 8 people tried the bed and they would have all been told about the ghosts, what to expect, and that its haunted. That level of suggestion would create the illusion of something happening in about 1 or 2 of the 8. Whats surprising is that even being told what to expect, 4 of them felt nothing. Probably because there's nothing there.
If you wake up in the middle of the night, and listen out for noises, guess what? you hear noises, all around your house. Is it haunted? of course not!

Arent ghosts boring? Kiddie ghosts having fun just pushing the mattress. come on, they can do better than that, how about getting in his sock draw and unpairing every pair? or tieing all his shoelaces together, and for a real laugh drawing a fake moustache on him during the night!

There is currently an epidemic of bed bugs in North America, I suggest he has brought a few back.

The most frightening thing here are the poll results - as it stands, 52% believe in ghosts!
All hope is lost.

I was having a cuppa with Horatio Nelson and chatting about this very same thing the other day and he said it was a load of rubbish, but changed his mind and said to keep a close eye on it.

My thoughts exactly. Sometimes I despair.
I thought I had a ghost in my bed as I was woken by someone poking me in the back but it was just my husband pointing at a crack on the wall that needed repairing. Or that's what he told me, anyway.

I have exactly the same problem as this chap - usually after a curry. In my case its like the spirits are levitating my body over the mattress on a cushion of foul smelling air !

Maybe one of the friends who declined to share his bed changed their mind in the middle of the night, got stuck under the matress in the process - and now wants to go home
