THE county’s fire service is investigating the feasibility of developing a shared control system with Shropshire’s fire and rescue service.

The proposal follows the Government’s decision not to go ahead with a regional fire control project in Wolverhampton.

Plans to create a £10 million regional fire and rescue control centre for the West Midlands were scrapped in December last year, three years after a purpose-built new building was completed.

Ministers announced they were abandoning the troubled scheme, which has been hit by a series of delays and mistakes.

The new project between Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service and Shropshire, proposes a shared resilient control room infrastructure with common operational, technological and procedural practices, which would operate from two remote locations in Worcestershire and Shropshire.

The matter will be discussed at Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Authority’s next meeting, which takes place tomorrow.  Members of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority have already approved a recommendation to draft a formal memorandum of understanding between the two fire authorities.

This sets out arrangements for how the project could take shape.

A more detailed report will be presented at the next meeting of Shropshire and Wrekin Fire and Rescue Authority on Wednesday, April 27.
