GOLFERS have swung into action to raise thousands of pounds for a breast unit.

Golfers from Sapey Golf Club in Upper Sapey, near Bromyard, held a number of fund-raising events over the last two months which raised £5,760 for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.

Women from the golf club organised several events which raised a total of more than £2,000 including a dance held at Worcester Warriors, garden parties, golf and bridge days, raffles and auctions.

Brenda Clinton, golfer and patron of the campaign, said: “The events were a great success and I would like to thank everyone who supported them and donated funds for the Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign.”

The campaign seeks to create a dedicated breast care unit at 220 Newtown Road in Worcester, next to the city’s Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

Your Worcester News continues to support the campaign, having adopted it before its launch in October 2009.

The unit will mean women and men can receive treatment in a more comfortable and less cramped and clinical setting than at present.

All the clinics will be under one roof, meaning less stress for patients and their families.

At the moment patients have to traipse between different clinics spread out over various floors in Worcester-shire Royal Hospital.

The unit layout has also received input from patients and their families to make sure it is adapted to their needs when campaign leaders open the unit.

One in eight women and one in 1,000 men develop breast cancer.
