People in the Droitwich and Evesham area have less that two weeks to get ready for the digital TV switchover which starts on April 6.

The switchover will convert the UK’s terrestrial television system to digital. Analogue channels are being switched off and replaced with free-to-air digital TV and radio services, also known as Freeview.

The switchover of the Bromsgrove transmitter will take place in two stages with BBC Two being switched off first on April 6. The remaining channels – BBC One, ITV1, Channel 4 and Channel 5 – will be switched off when stage two starts on Wednesday, April 13, and the power of the exisiting freeview signal will be increased.

Latest research shows nine out of 10 homes in the area have already gone digital on their main set but those who have not are running the risk of a blank screen.

The other transmitters for Worcestershire will switch in two stages on September 7 and September 21.

Digital UK, the independent body in charge of the process, is in the final stages of its information campaign. Large warning messages reminding viewers to get ready will be broadcast on analogue channels.

There is a Switchover Help Scheme which urges eligible older and disabled viewers yet to respond to let them know whether they need practical support, including on choice of equipment, installation and aftercare.

Digital UK’s regional manager Peter Monteith said: “While the process will be straightforward for most people, inevitably some viewers may need a bit of extra help so we are working with the Switchover Help Scheme and local charities to offer support for those who need it.”

This change will free up airwaves for new services such as ultra-fast wireless broadband and mobile television.
