SIR - I do not know what EU polls David Candler is referring to in his recent letter talking about the EU in glowing terms. What unadulterated tripe! Some 70 per cent of the British people would like to learn more about the impact the EU has on their lives. I am astounded at the audacity of his proclamation - since when were the British people asked about this EU cancer? Even the last General Election did not get a response from 70 per cent of the British people, so his EU propaganda does not ring true.

Vladimir Bukovksy, the 63-year old former Soviet dissident, fears that the European Union is on its way to becoming another Soviet Union. In a speech he recently delivered in Brussels, Mr Bukovsky called the EU a "monster" that must be destroyed, the sooner the better, before it develops into a fullfledged totalitarian state.

There is absolutely no substantiated proof the British were asked their opinion; unlike the French and the Dutch voters who, when given the opportunity, told the EU-lovers where to go. The perpetual stranger to the truth we have as a Prime Minister, having promised the British people a referendum on the very subject, failed in that duty and dishonoured his office and stained his character forever.
