SIR – Worcester City Council Labour leader Adrian Gregson’s alleged fury over the appointment of Jabba Riaz as chairman of the licensing committee (Worcester News, May 20) is a bit rich.
This is especially as it appears to be based on an accusation of a “conflict of interest” due to Councillor Riaz having once been a taxi driver, according to the Worcester News report of the meeting. Adrian Gregson aspires to lead the city council. At the same time, he not only represents many of its employees in his role as a Unison activist, but has also taken up protesting against the coalition Government’s cuts in services since New Labour lost the general election.
Before that, he not only supported the Blair government, whose reforms transferred his fellow Unison members to the private sector on inferior terms, but took issue with anyone who spoke out against New Labour. If Coun Gregson and his clique wanted to control the city council, they should have won the wards that would have given them control in May.
Instead, they contrived to lose a ward and hand control to the Tories.
