A LANDMARK city furniture retailer will shut its doors for the final time tomorrow.
Russell & Dorrell in Worcester will close, although all deliveries will be honoured.
Staff were busy packing up and dealing with customers hopeful of a bargain at the showroom in County Mills, Riverside, yesterday.
Originally in the High Street, the store was started in 1834 after Mr Russell bought the business from a tailor called Thomas Wilks.
In 1846 it became Russell & Dorrell after Mr Dorrell’s great, great uncle James became a partner, eventually buying out Mr Russell in 1870. Over the years the business flourished and became a well-known name in the part of the High Street which now houses Monsoon and Next. The store moved to its present location in 2003.
Howard Dorrell, company director, said the store had come to the “end of the road” after suffering in the housing market slowdown.
David Bennett, of administrators Grant Thornton, said: “This partially reflects the current economic climate and a change in the retail environment.”
