A SCHOOL which campaigned for better road safety will not be receiving a formal crossing nearby.

Your Worcester News reported in April how more than 300 people signed a petition supporting a scheme near to Abberley Parochial VC Primary School.

The petition was presented to Councillor Derek Prodger, the then Worcestershire County Council cabinet member for transport and safe environment.

The school is bordered by a busy side road and the B4202 Clows Top Road and concerns were raised after reports of several near misses involving pupils and parents attempting to cross the road.

But following further investigation, the council officers concluded that the area did not meet the threshold for a school crossing patrol to be provided.

Headteacher Ann Wylie said she was very pleased that problems with parking near to the school had been tackled with new yellow zig zag lines, but called for better crossing provision.

“We would like to see something extra, like a zebra crossing, to increase the safety of our children, especially when we are taking them across the road to the village hall for their PE lessons,” she said.

Councillor John Smith, the county council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “We are committed to improving road safety with schools across the county and take the views of residents very seriously.

“While the site doesn’t meet the criteria for a school crossing patrol, we are pleased to confirm that the school has undertaken pedestrian road safety training and we have also arranged for considerable bikeability cycle training with the school in the future.”
