MORE evidence of a mediaeval hamlet has been discovered on the site of a former Worcester farm.

Two more ancient dwellings have been uncovered at Earl’s Court Farm, Tudor Way, Dines Green, after excavations were commissioned by the developer Redrow Homes.

The firm is currently building more than 140 houses on the site.

Matthew Pratt, the managing director for the developer Redrow Homes (Midlands), said: “During the excavations two small mediaeval buildings, thought to be the homes of 12th century agricultural workers, were revealed.

“These were essentially primitive structures and would be unidentifiable to the untrained eye.

“While the artefacts uncovered during the investigations have been cleaned and catalogued by the archaeologists, the mediaeval homes themselves had decayed to the extent that only the footprints were visible.

“The footprints of these buildings were recorded before works commenced. We are in discussion with the council’s archaeological unit as to what will happen to the finds.”

The mediaeval hamlet at Earl’s Court Farm was previously unknown.

But a well-preserved moated site, likely to be the residence of a local landowner, is a scheduled ancient monument which will not be affected by the new housing development.

It will be maintained by a management company which will also be responsible for public open space.
