THE News of the World newspaper, which is at the centre of growing controversy over the phone hacking scandal, is to cease publication after 168 years.
News International chairman James Murdoch, son of media tycoon Rupert, made the annoucement late this afternoon in a statement to the publication's 200 staff.
The news comes as high-profile advertisers queued to withdraw their support, including the Royal British Legion - after allegations emerged today that phones belonging to the grieving relatives of soldiers killed in Afghanistan were hacked.
The final News of the World will be published this Sunday, without adverts, and all proceeds will go to 'good causes'.
It is rumoured that a Sun on Sunday, owned by News International, will take the NotW's place.
