TRAVELLERS who have been unlawfully camping near the city’s hospital have been stopped from getting on another site.

The travellers arrived at the land off Newtown Road on Friday, July 22, without the permission of the Berkeley estate, which owns the agricultural field.

At its peak, the field was home to more than 30 caravans but a civil notice was served on the trespassers earlier this week and they had started to move off by Wednesday.

They were stopped from getting on to a field at Malvern by police and security staff.

It is understood they had been trying to get to another site but this was already fully booked up for the Welland Steam Rally which is being held this weekend.

Insp Janet Heritage, Worcester area police commander, said: “Alternative locations were sought, however we were unable to secure a suitable site for them.

“They have now been moved from the common at Malvern and some caravans have returned to the site at Worcester.”

There are now about 14 caravans back on the field near the hospital.

Although notice of an order has been served on the travellers, the full court order allowing the land owners to forcibly remove any trespassers is expected to be granted by Worcester County Court on Monday, August 1.
