GIANT tractors, daredevil acrobats and classic cars were just some of the attractions on the first day of this year’s Welland Steam Rally.

Crowds descended on Woodside Farm, between Malvern and Upton-upon-Severn, yesterday for a day of nostalgia, sights and steam.

Hundreds of exhibitors brought along thousands of vehicles, including vintage and classic cars, motorcyles, trucks, buses and historic military vehicles.

Among the stars of the rally this weekend are road locomotives, steam wagons, ploughing engines and early tractors.

And the tractor pulling is set to be a huge draw for visitors, with the rally’s largest ever turnout of tractors.

The Vander Brothers will perform their unique brand of death-defying aerial acrobatics, while Mr Alexander’s Travelling Show will have variety to entertain all ages.

Other crowd pleasers due to take place throughout the weekend include a farmers’ market, old-time fairground, the Penny Rigden Dancers, falconry and a steam crane and working area.

General organiser Sally Prout said there had been a good turnout on the first day.

She said: “It’s been fantastic. We’ve had a really good turnout and the vintage auction went brilliantly.

“We’ve got two more days and about 6,000 exhibits, including everything from motorcycles to vintage cars to tractor engines.

“There really is something for everybody. It’s a fantastic day out and we have some very specialised shows.”

The Welland Steam Rally continues today and tomorrow. Gates open daily from 9.30am to 7pm and tickets cost £10 for adults, £8 for children over 11 and pensioners, and free for under-11s.
