THERE are long delays after a vehicle fire closed two lanes of the M42.

Firefighters from Redditch and Bromsgrove attended the incident just after 9am today after reports smoke and a smell of burning were coming from under the bonnet of a car.

Lanes two and three of the M42 southbound carriageway were closed between Junction 2 A441 Alvechurch and J1 A38 Bromsgrove while crews investigated the incident.

The vehicle has now been recovered but the lanes remain closed for resurfacing work. The entry slip road at Junction 1 has also been closed to help ease congestion. It is expected they will reopen at 6pm tonight.

It is understood the car was caught up in queueing traffic caused by an earlier incident where a caravan overturned.
