A LASTING memorial has been dedicated to a former Worcester city councillor who died last year.

A bench was placed on South Quay, beside the river and near the fountains, in memory of Councillor Barry MacKenzie-Williams.

The Right Reverend Christopher Mayfield, the retired Bishop of Manchester, conducted a short service of dedication in the sunshine on Friday, August 19 to mark the occasion.

Mr MacKenzie-Williams, who died on Thursday, January 14, 2010, was first elected to the city council in 2002 and served on the cabinet from 2003, becoming deputy leader in 2006.

Councillor Roger Knight said: “How fitting it is to have this memorial to Barry in a location he enjoyed and in a city he loved and served.

"Barry was a good man, good councillor and more importantly a good friend. I miss him as do our colleagues.”
