STOURPORT Basin has been awarded a “red wheel” plaque, recognising the historical interest of the waterway landmark.

The plaque was unveiled on Wednesday last week at Barge Lock House, Mart Lane.

The Transport Trust runs the red wheel scheme, which commemorates transport sites of historical significance.

British Waterways heritage adviser David Viner said: “Stourport Basin is a great example of brilliant canal engineering, which is still a thriving canal link some 250 years after it was originally built.

“We are really pleased to accept this award.”

A major regeneration of the basin was completed in 2008. It has received considerable investment over recent years and benefited from the continuing support of Stourport Forward.

Stuart Wilkinson, chairman of the Transport Trust, attended the unveiling and said the basin thoroughly deserved the award.

Among the local dignitaries present at the unveiling event were chairman of Wyre Forest District Council Stephen Clee, deputy mayor of Stourport Gary Talbot, South Wales and Severn Waterways manager Nick Worthington, Transport Trust secretary Peter Stone and British Waterways head of enterprise Tony Harvey.
