WHERE might you find the spot where Saint George killed the dragon, the resting place of England’s last Sin Eater and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution – not to mention a well-loved British sports car?

They are all locations linked with churches featured in a new calendar produced by the Diocese of Hereford.

Ledbury Parish Church, St Michael and All Angels, is one of the churches featured.

In an introduction to the calendar, the Bishop of Hereford, the Right Rev Anthony Priddis, said: “The Diocese of Hereford is blessed with so many beautiful church buildings.

“Most of them stand at the centre of communities they have served for 1,000 years or more. This is your Christian heritage, as well as ours.

“Here, we can only share a tiny part of that heritage, just 13 of our total of 420 churches, but we hope it will encourage you to step through the door of any of our church buildings and find something special.”

As well as each of the 12 months featuring a main picture, the calendar also includes interesting features and details from the buildings as well as postcodes to help visitors to find the churches.

Sales of the calendar will not only benefit the diocese but also individual parishes, which can buy packs of 10 at a discount.

Anni Holden, who was responsible for the production of the calendar, said: “The 2012 calendar is a first for the diocese but we thought it was an attractive way of producing a really a nice gift for people, a chance to show off our wonderful buildings and their surroundings and make a little bit of money to maintain them too.

“It should be a winner all round.”
