Pictured here are the drunken vandals who carried out a vile attack on a marquee at Worcester Racecourse – revealed at court as two people with no previous convictions and “mortified and humiliated” by what they had done.

Last time they were pictured on the front page it was in CCTV footage which had caught them in the act.

We reported last month how fire extinguishers were set off, tomato ketchup was smeared over the carpets and a first aid kit was destroyed in the early hours of Friday, September 30.

Daniel Peakman, aged 20, and Emily Johnson, 22, handed themselves into police after images showed them using the hospitality suite as a toilet.

Appearing at Worcester Magistrates Court yesterday, both admitted criminal damage and were sentenced to 120 hours’ unpaid work each. They have also been ordered to pay more than £700 in compensation to the racecourse for the damage.

Mark Johnson, prosecuting, said the pair had met for the first time at an indie-rock night at the Velvet Lounge nightclub and left at 3am to go to Johnson’s home in Oldbury Road, St John’s, Worcester.

Both had consumed large amounts of alcohol. The court was told they had entered the marquee in an attempt to find a lighter or borrow one from a security guard.

Mr Johnson said: “It is rather a tragedy to see people with no previous convictions come before the court for an offence like this. It was very unpleasant for those who had to sort this mess out.”

Judith Kenney, defending, said Johnson has been suffering from panic attacks since seeing the picture of her urinating in the marquee.

Mrs Kenney said: “She’s mortified at what can only be described as a public humiliation.”

She said Peakman, of Werstan Close, Malvern, found his jeans and trainers covered with tomato ketchup the following day but he had no recollection of the incident.

She said: “He finds it appalling he is responsible for doing a ‘number two’ in the marquee. He got a call from a friend who saw his picture and told him. When he saw the picture himself he was horrified.”

Mrs Kenney said Johnson worked full-time as a senior sales assistant and Peakman was claiming job seeker’s allowance. He had previously worked at the Pheasant Inn, in Welland, near Malvern.

Passing sentence, chairman of the bench Keith Stokes-Smith, said: “You allowed yourselves to consume so much alcohol that you lost control and responsibility.

“You conducted your personal business in a very undignified manner.

“You are in court today thanks to the local newspaper seeking the public’s help locating you.”

They were both ordered to pay £85 in costs.

• Another male caught on camera causing similar damage to the marquee has yet to be identified.
