Worcester Wolves director of basketball Paul James believes tonight’s home clash with British League newcomers Durham Wildcats (7pm) will be one of their biggest tests of the season to date.

It will be the first time this campaign the University of Worcester-based side have played matches on consecutive nights and the Wolves chief is keen for his team to maintain their fine start to the season.

Prior to last night’s BBL Cup quarter-final trip to Mer-sey Tigers, the Wolves had won five of their opening six matches.

Yet, despite Wildcats’ indifferent start to the campaign, James is expecting a tough test.

“Durham may be new to the league, but their coach, Dave Elderkin, isn’t.

“He has been around for quite a few years,” the Wol-ves chief said.

“You know that the teams he coaches are going to be organised and that we are going to have to be at our best to beat them.

“I’m expecting Durham to be a very disciplined side and it will be a big test for us because it is the first time this season that we have had back-to-back games.”

While Wolves and the Wild-cats face each other for the first time in the BBL, Wor-cester and Durham are no strangers.

Both teams have gone head-to-head in university matches recently and it was the north-east side that claimed a 80-53 success in their last meeting.

James, who is also the director of basketball at the university, said: “I don’t think either of us will read too much into that game as none of our BBL players who play for the university team featured.

“Worcester Wolves were playing Guildford Heat that night.”
