THE ambulance service is now feeding the public information via Twitter and Facebook and bosses say it could help in the event of a terrorist attack.

Leaders at the West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust are urging people to join their 1,500 followers on Twitter.

The trust’s Facebook page has 370 ‘likes’ who get instant updates and the official Posterous site (blogging platform) has received more than 31,000 hits with each story being read on average nearly 100 times.

The trust’s communications director Murray MacGregor said: “We see real opportunities for us should there be a major incident; either a natural disaster or a terrorist incident.

“We have already seen examples from around the world of the value of using social media to provide effective and instant communications to the public and media alike.”
