A LANDMARK railway bridge looks set for repair and maintenance works to get it back on track.

Worcester Foregate Street underbridge, which was originally constructed around 1860 before it was replaced in 1906, is in need of some tender love and care.

A site inspection in the summer last year concluded that the structure is generally in decent condition but various defects were identified.

The deck troughs and main girders are suffering from corrosion and localised loss of sections while the drainage system of the underbridge, which was granted listed status as a grade two heritage structure in 1999, is now in poor condition.

In documents submitted to Worcester City Council’s planning department, applicants Network Rail said: “The proposed repair and maintenance works, whilst constituting an alteration to a grade two listed structure, would not be significant in nature.

“The proposed works are considered sympathetic to the existing structure, given they would have no adverse impact upon the overall design and external appearance of the underbridge.

“In addition, the works will not adversely affect the features which contribute to the special architectural and historical interest of the structure.

“Accordingly, the impact of the works would not be significant.

“Notwithstanding all of the above, Network Rail believes the development proposals would have the effect of preserving the special architectural and historical interest of the listed railway structure and would ensure the continued safe operation of the railway.”

Conservation officer Cristina Gardiner has no objections provided a number of conditions, including any repainting matching existing colours on the bridge, are adhered to.

Archaeological officer James Dinn has requested a comprehensive photographic survey to take place before planners make a decision on the matter.
