A DRUNK 21-year-old man pushed his pregnant girlfriend over and tried to drag her along the street outside a Worcester pub.

Edward Betts, of Wakeman Street, Barbourne, Worcester, admitted assaulting Lisa Marie Stephens.

Sarah Stock, prosecuting at Worcester Magistrates Court, said Betts called Miss Stephens at about 2.20am on Friday, December 23, asking her to meet him outside the Cavalier Tavern in St George’s Lane North.

An argument broke out when she met him and she could tell that he had been drinking.

He suggested they go back to his mother’s house and “sneak around like teenagers again”, but she told him she was tired and pregnant and wanted to go home.

Betts told her she was not going anywhere and grabbed her with both hands.

He let go but then went to push her over a small wall. She stumbled and he grabbed her again and was trying to pull her along the street.

Miss Stephens, who suffered painful bruising to her arms and chest during the incident, ran off when two men intervened.

Betts later flagged down police and explained there had been an argument and that he was concerned Miss Stephens – who was 10 weeks pregnant with their child – had not come home.

Becky Connelly, defending, said Betts had not been himself.

She said he had lost his grandfather just a week before and it had affected him seriously.

He had been prescribed anti-depressants and has since had them doubled in strength.

She said: “He is not making excuses. He wanted company that night and reacted badly.

"He has been concerned from the start for both his girlfriend and their unborn child and this was an isolated incident for which he is extremely remorseful.”

Chairman of the bench Keith Stokes-Smith told Betts: “From your ex-girlfriend’s point of view this must have been quite a frightening experience."

Betts was fined £50 and ordered to pay £150 compensation to Miss Stephens, as well as £85 costs.
