A man who pushed his partner off a wall and swore at a passerby who tried to help has been sent to prison.

Martin Tandy, aged 53, admitted assaulting Kathryn Causton and causing harassment, alarm and distress to Stuart McNichol.

Worcester Magistrates Court was told Tandy and Ms Causton were drunk sitting on a wall off St Paul’s Mews in St Paul’s Street at about 1.50pm on January 6.

Samantha Webley, prosecuting, said Tandy, of Barbourne Road, Worcester, was seen to put his left arm around her and she shrugged his arm off.

Mrs Webley said: “He grabbed her round the back of her head and forcibly pushed her to the floor. She fell without reacting and her forehead collided with the pavement.”

Mrs Webley said passer-by Mr McNichol called an ambulance but Tandy became aggressive and swore at him.

The court was told Ms Causton had a cut above her eye but refused hospital treatment and did not make a complaint.

Susie Duncan, defending, said Tandy was an alcoholic whose life went downhill 10 years ago after the break-up of his second marriage.

She said he was a hard working man and had been in the Army before his alcohol problems but had been on the streets for seven years before recently getting bed and breakfast accommodation with Ms Causton.

She said the couple argued after Tandy said he was going to return to Gloucestershire area.

She also said Tandy had pancreatitis and was unwell.

Tandy also admitted failing to turn up at court on Monday, January 9. District judge Nigel Cadbury sentenced him to 14 days in prison for each offence to run consecutively. A Crasbo application banning him from Worcester city centre will be heard on January 25.
