film fans will gather in Evesham tomorrow morning for a momentous occasion as the Regal Cinema makes its long-awaited return.

The sense of anticipation is building ahead of the re-opening of the art deco cinema, which has undergone a two-and-a-half year, £2 million restoration.

Developers Lumiere Kenesis have breathed new life into the grade two listed building, which has stood empty for almost 10 years. Everything is now in place to welcome more than 300 visitors to the cinema tomorrow, where once again the lights will go down and the film will roll.

Evesham’s youngsters will be first to get a taste of what’s on offer in the new auditorium, with the first film to be shown, Puss in Boots at 10.30am, which is part of the re-launched Saturday Morning Chums Club.

The film Hugo will be shown at 2pm before the main event – opening night, which will be compèred by comedian Alistair McGowan, who grew up near Evesham and has long supported the cinema.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a number of short films from Bafta, enjoy artwork and a drink in the bar and take a look at the new facilities.

Rounding off the opening weekend on Sunday is My Week with Marilyn and The Ides of March.

Project manager Laurence Wiper said the team was raring to go. “We have had a lot of interest from the town as well as further afield and we want to attract people from all over to come and enjoy the Regal. We want to thank everyone involved in helping us,” he said.
