THE memory of a popular teenager who died on Christmas Eve will live on through a Worcestershire football league.

Organisers of the Ambassador Evesham Football League have renamed its under-16s cup the Scott Holden Memorial Cup in honour of the 16-year-old from Pershore who played for Drakes Broughton Rangers Football Club.

The Pershore High School pupil was found dead in his bedroom at the family home in Newlands on Saturday, December 24. It is not yet known what caused his death.

Steve Goode, under-16s manager at Drakes Broughton Rangers Football Club, said the club was proud of the league’s decision.

“The cup will hopefully still be going after we’re all gone, so it’s a great honour,” he said.

“Everyone at the club is very proud. On February 18, we play Broadway in the semi-finals of the cup so we’ll try to put in a good result for Scott and hopefully get through to the final. Maybe we will be the first to win it.”

Earlier this month, his family, friends, fellow teammates, classmates and teachers gathered at Pershore Abbey to pay their final respects to Liverpool fan Scott, who was a striker in the Rangers under-16 side.

On Saturday, players and fans at Worcester City Football Club carried out a minute’s applause ahead of the home game against Colwyn Bay.

Mr Goode said many people had been touched by Scott’s death.

On Sunday, February 5, the Rangers are hosting a memorial football match at Pershore Town FC’s ground in King George’s Way.

Kick-off is 2pm. Funds will be raised for Midlands Air Ambulance.
