PUPILS at Abbey Park First School, Pershore, are teaming up with their local Rotary club to raise money to buy a shelter box.

A shelter box provides shelter, warmth and survival equipment to people around the world made homeless by natural disasters while they rebuild their homes.

Each box contains a tent large enough to provide shelter for an extended family and essential items such as water containers and purification equipment, mo-squito nets, cooking stoves and blankets.

To raise money for the boxes the children, along with members of Pershore Rotary Club, will be holding a bring and buy sale later this month selling their unwanted toys and DVDs.

Staff and children came up with the idea after the rotary club erected a shelter box tent in the school’s main hall during a community open day.

Headteacher David John-son said: “We are always looking for opportunities to raise the children’s awareness of those in the world who are less fortunate than ourselves.

“Each box is given a unique reference number so we will be able to find out when and where our box has been sent.”
