Nuisance alcoholic is told he runs risk of prison

AN alcoholic has been made the subject of a Crasbo banning him from drinking and being abusive in public.

District Judge Nigel Cadbury imposed the two-year order on Martin Tandy following his convictions for theft, failing to surrender to bail, assaulting Kathryn Causton in Worcester and being drunk and disorderly.

Colin Heald, prosecuting at Worcester Magistrates Court said Tandy, who is currently serving a 42-day prison sentence for the crimes, had 150 offences on his record.

He said: “Many were for public order and many were exacerbated by drinking and that’s the reason behind the application for the order.”

Susie Duncan, defending, said Tandy, a former soldier, fully understood the implications of the Crasbo.

It prevents him from behaving in any way that causes or is likely to cause any person harassment, alarm or distress, including (but not only by) using foul, abusive, offensive language or offensive gestures and using aggressive, threatening or intimidating behaviour.

The 53-year-old is also banned from consuming alcohol in any place being a designated place where the consumption of alcohol is prohibited by law.

If he breaches the order, Tandy, of no fixed address, could face up to five years in prison. Mr Cadbury said: “It seems clear you have discussed this carefully with your solicitor so you fully understand what you must not do.

“Part of your difficulty is that you drink a lot and when you drink you may not remember what you do.

“The order is intended to try and make you really think very carefully about your drinking so you don’t breach it.

“I make this for two years and it’s purely intended as another way to deal with your behaviour to try and prevent you from carrying on committing offences.”

A spokesman for West Mercia Police urged Worcester people to get in touch with them immediately if they experienced Tandy behaving in a drunken or anti-social manner.
