Safety warning after spate of crashes Safety warning after spate of crashes

THE bad weather caused a number of crashes involving off-road vehicles over the weekend.

A number of crashes involved 4x4 vehicles, including a Shogun which was written off, a Land Rover Discovery that left the road and ended up on its roof, and a Freelander 4x4 which skidded on the road and hit a house.

Drivers are now being reminded to be careful when travelling on roads affected by snow or ice.

Vicki Bristow, communications manager for the Safer Roads Partnership said: “Winter drivers need to use their eyes more effectively; drive carefully and smoothly, avoiding harsh accelerating and braking regardless of whether your vehicle is a 4x4 or not.”

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service were called to help with 12 separate crashes across the two counties during the weekend. They included:

• A car which ended up on its roof following a collision on the A44 at Bredenbury on Saturday.

• A collision on the northbound carriageway of the M5, between junctions 6 Worcester north and 5 Droitwich, at 8.35pm on Saturday.

• A collision on the A422 at Broughton Hackett, near Worcester, at 9.50am on Sunday, involving two cars.

• A collision on the M5 southbound between junctions 7, Worcester South and 8, the M50, at 7.25pm on Sunday, involving five cars and an articulated lorry.

• An overturned car on the A4112 at Eardisley at 11.15pm on Sunday.

In my experience it is most likely to be 4x4 drivers who haven't got a clue how to drive in tricky situations and think just being a 4x4 makes it safe to exceed safe speeds and end up out of control.
2 wheel drive vehicles seem to proceed with more caution.
Anyway this is no different to non-hazardous driving conditions - 4x4 users (generalising here folks) seem to have less common sense and courtesy

In the last 3 weeks I have been crashed into twice and my husband once (in our cars). On all three occasions we were stationary when hit!

If Ms Bristow and the Speed Camera Partnership are that concerned about harsh acceleration and braking, perhaps they should remove their speed cameras as they seem to be the main cause.........

Only for drivers who are driving without due care and attention ;-)

I was surprised at the number of cars being driven recklessly over the snowy/slushy weekend.

Those idiots will be rewarded with hugely increased insurance premiums at renewal.

On Saturday I saw many drivers with 4wd vehicles driving as if it were dry, under false pretences that they will have no problems, especially those in off-roaders.

Little do they know that on snow and ice 4wd only offers marginally better traction than 2wd vehicles. The key to staying on the road in snow is driving carefully and to the conditions and having snow tyres. Look at rally cars in the snow, yes many have 4wd but what ultimately keeps them on the road are their special tyres.

I can confirm that the taxi I was in on Saturday night drove very recklessly - about 60mph in the 30. Worryingly stupid even when the roads are dry..........
