VISIT: Queen Elizabeth II is to visit Worcester in July VISIT: Queen Elizabeth II is to visit Worcester in July

THE Queen will visit Worcester this summer to mark her Diamond Jubilee, it has been announced.

Her Majesty, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, will visit the Faithful City as part of a tour of the country in July. We broke the news on our website here yesterday.

Exact details of her visit are being kept under wraps by Buckingham Palace, but yesterday’s announcement has already caused huge excitement in the city.

The visit will be hosted by the Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire, Michael Brinton.

He said: “I am sure I speak on behalf of all the residents of Worcestershire when I say how delighted I am that the county has been chosen to be part of the jubilee visit programme.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for our county to celebrate together and showcase the heritage and vibrancy we have to offer.”

Worcester MP Robin Walker said he was very excited about the news of the royal visit.

He said: “I think it will be a fantastic showcase for the whole city.

"I would say we’re lucky but as one of the few places chosen in the West Midlands I would say that we deserve it.

"I think it’s great for the city to showcase the old and the new and positive things such as the Hive.

“Along with the news of the Olympic Torch, these are two really big opportunities for Worcester to show what it’s got.”

The visit on Wednesday, July 11, is one of a series of visits the couple will make throughout the UK to mark the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, marking 60 years of her reign.

She will also visit other cities in the area including Hereford and Birmingham.

Exact details of what the Queen and Prince Philip will do during their time in Worcester will be released by Buckingham Palace in due course.

The Queen acceded to the throne on February 6, 1952, and her Coronation took place on June 2, 1953.

The first visit on the tour will be to Leicester on Thursday, March 8.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will then travel to 51 towns and cities across the UK.

I was privilaged to meet Her Majesty in 1985 whilst serving in the army in West Germany, she was very pleasant and charming and seemed to take a real interest in what i and my friends spoke about .I'll be there applauding her.

A lifetime of duty, given with complete dignity, and without putting a foot wrong. Still going strong, carrying out hundreds of engagements 20 years after most people have retired. God Save Our Queen (and Prince Philip). Proud of our long and rich history and heritage, I'll be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee. :)

"Exact details of her visit are being kept under wraps". Really? Anyone want to bet against the Queen officially opening the Hive?
