Exclusive By Richard Vernalls, @rvernallsWN #worcsnews
A riverside café is being taken over by nightclub owners with plans for a high-profile champagne and coffee bar.
The Quay, off South Quay, Worcester, shut after the liquidation of the firm that owns both the café and neighbouring restaurant Brown’s last month.
But the venue is set to reopen after a seven-year lease was signed between landlord Graham Gallop and the owners of Bushwackers Darren and Craig Pinches.
The deal’s value is not being disclosed but the Pinches brothers have also shaken hands on the freeholds of the two flats above the restaurant, which make up part of the landmark Grade-II listed Band House building.
The brothers also run city nightclub Sin, own a good amount of city property and have restaurants and bars in Birmingham and Swindon.
They have made no secret of their plans to take over Brown’s too.
Darren Pinches said: “We’ve signed on the Quay and the deal is done, and we’re waiting to hear on our offer for Brown’s [today].”
A deadline for submitting offers for the Brown’s freehold had been set for today by the liquidator, but the brothers were not waiting for that outcome before showing their hand.
“What we’ve done is taken the ‘front’ of Brown’s, and we’ve got all the outside seating there through our deal on The Quay now.”
The 120-cover Quay will be run under a newly formed company, and branding deals have been signed with champagne producer Moet et Chandon, with discussions with a major coffee chain and doughnut supplier also well advanced.
Mr Pinches said: “We want it to be a feel-good place. It’s right by the river so it’s perfect, and we’ve signed up with Moet to make it a Moet-branded bar with a coffee house.
"The feel will be like that of the bar on the top floor of Selfridge’s in Birmingham.
“Right now, we’re going to start a refurbishment taking eight to 12 weeks.”
He also revealed that the brothers have applied for the premises’ licence, which was owned by Brown’s. Licensing could take eight weeks to thrash out and could be further held up if the liquidators or any new owner for Brown’s opposes the bid.
The brothers had been negotiating the leasehold of the Crown & Sandys pub and restaurant in Ombersley, near Worcester – also part of the Brown’s group owned by Richard Everton – but confirmed they have now walked away from any deal to run it.

Worcester so needs a place with proper class...I can't wait for it to re-open....HOPEFULLY with the Pinches at the helm!!!

"...worry about the local elderly residents who have enjoyed the relative peace of a nice restaurant". Hamilton60, who are these elderly people and where exactly do they live? Browns is not in the middle of a housing estate, in fact it's fairly isolated when it comes to residential accomodation. Unless you think the swans on the river are going to be upset...

As mentioned above im not a snob, but you sound just a little daft to think you get the same product for £4.50 as you do £15+ (obviously the information about wetherspoons isnt my own but is taken from the internet and freely available for others to read, iv just used it to explain a point). Just to further enlighten you cities are places where people of all types and wealth live, so places like the barn own are great for those on a tighter budget(like me) but for those with more expendable income places such as bindles, ostlers etc provide.
hopefully this won't be another over priced place to eat like it was before. i'd like to see 2 4 1 on main courses and a sunday carvery. i know most of the food snobs in worcester won't be happy unless they are paying over £14 a main course. the majority of people don't want this!! let local businesses follow asda's suit and make the city centre more accessible for the average joe. how can places like "browns/bindles
/bush wackers/ostlers etc" expect you to pay £15plus for a steak when you can get one for £4.50 if you are dining 2 4 1 (i.e. the barn owl - top place by the way! food is very fresh and the best pea's ive had for a long time)??? Sheer madness. fizzy wine by the river - no thanks not for me and my friends, weatherspoons would be more suited, as yet again the majority of worcester wont want to pay £4plus a drink.

I was chatting with one of the managers and he assured me the majority of stuff was homemade to ensure maximum freshness.

Hmm you seem to do a lot of thinking but there isnt much in your post that could be called fact. So im still under the impression you may be abit under educated (so il go easy), most of Worcester’s gentrified/expensive areas are well outside of the city walls, battenhall, barbourne etc are some distance from the original city walls which extended approximately to where foregate station bridge now is and along down into Sidbury where the glass house was. Obviously history isn’t a strong point of yours either if you wish to learn more please let me know (im always happy to help). As for gaining access to the city centre last time I checked this was free and you will also find establishments like greggs etc for your noshing pleasure, then those that want to spend a little more can and everyone’s happy.

You called? ...The Snob is back... I had to laugh at the prospect of a champagne bar having 2-4-1 meals and a carvery. I can see the elite of Worcester, sitting down, after a hard day of business, buying, selling, SELL HIGH, BUY LOW! ''Lovely champagne Dominic isnt it?'' ''Yes Bertie but not the biggest Moet fan, far too many bubbles for my liking but its nice to have somewhere to go where i can enjoy a glass of champagne by the river now that it looks so wonderful after its extensive refurbishment. '' ''Yes, well i wouldnt say its something thats needed in Worcester, but why not hey?? Rather here than Hereford'' ''Bloody Hereford'' ''Yeah and main meals 2-4-1 and a carvery at £2.67 you really cant go wrong can you?'' some thing about that doesnt seem right does it? ok folks lets put carverys on every street corner, lets put them in shopping malls, lets put them on roundabouts, lets install them into various aisles of big shops so that way, we wont have to waddle much more than 20 meters without a lovely carvery to fill our troughs. now we can really set off the maggie gravy, mash pellets, heat lamp dried beef and pork, 'crunchy' vegetables that have had all remaining nutrients sucked out of them into the water, then the water thrown away with a glass of champagne, after all its the ultimate pairing. lets celebrate this obscenely poor way of serving food by suggesting every new venture in worcester, no matter how ambitious and far from the carvery market, should have a carvery installed into it. seriously people, you lot make laugh so much. whoever writes your parody style comments is a genius. hilarious. carvery?? two for one?? under an article about a champagne bar?? you couldnt make it up!! Your level of knowledge of how restaurants and kitchens operate is hilariously little. i love you guys so much, you make me laugh, so well done you! if you hadnt noticed on your frequent visits to the other side of the river MrStJohns, there is elderly persons housing opposite the small browns carpark. you could walk there in under 10 seconds from Browns front door. The Pinches-as we can see from the girl's comment about how excited she is about this, you clearly read these comments. i hope you have laughed at much as i have and not sweated too much over not getting business because people want to rename Worcester CarveryLand (TM) and im sure you have enough sense to take absolutely no comments from people who will merely slate your venture for being normally priced as opposed to actually going there. This Snob (im giving myself a capital letter now, because i can) will see you at the bar. Im taking it you will have magnums and jeroboams? I look forward to re-enacting my nights out in Cafe De Paris (St Tropez) by the river in Worcester. Bottoms up folks!

I personally wouldn't go to Bushwackers in the evening as it is not my kind of place but the food in the day is excellent so there is no reason to suppose that an upmarket venue operated by the Pinches will be anything but good. They are not aiming at the same clientele as some of their other venues.
