Bring your books outside and enjoy the view, children

IT may look like a mediaeval gun emplacement but the turret-shaped structure rising in front of Worcester’s landmark Hive building will in fact be a place of learning and storytelling.

The Story Island is part of the Hive’s children’s library, which will be one of the largest in the country when the building opens.

The cut-stone open-air structure connects to the building via a walkway, and is planted with three Scots pine trees.

It is part of the landscaping which is finally taking shape, with the interior of the building all but finished.

Worcestershire County Council and the University of Worcester are moving archives, artefacts, books and other learning materials into the £60 million Hive ready for opening later this year.

A county council spokesman said: “The island is a specially designed outdoor classroom with wi-fi, and is accessed directly from the children’s library on the Hive’s second level. This offers young people the chance to take their books outside and enjoy the views over the river Severn.”

Outside, native trees including willows, alder and black poplar have been planted, reflecting the riverside nature of the site.

The turret and other outdoor areas feature built-in archaeological and architectural fragments from the pre-build digs that took place on the site.

Iain Paul, strategic design manager, said: “The trees are the latest step in the Hive’s journey to completion and provide an oasis of green in this city centre location.”

I trust that the exciting view as shown of a Car-park is not to be the inspiration for our next generations?
Those who are spending this £60+ millions on this library are really digging around to justify this huge amount of money when there are thousands finding themselves HOMELESS through no fault of their own, but due to the bad handling of the so-called experts of the economy.
During the boom years millions of pensioners went about their lives as normal, NOT running up DEBTS, NOT abusing Credit or Debit card.
But now we are having the same problems about making it to the end of the week/month, with many having to make the choice of HEAT or EAT.
And it's no good expecting politicians on £65,000+ expenses a year to understand.
The promised huge Pension increase is yet another political sham since for those least well off on Pensions Credit, will have any increase taken off the credit meaning that most will lose £3 and more per week, and the Social Landlords, supported by this government are poised ready to increase their rents by the maximum in order to replace the Government cuts in Supporting People grants, or building / improvement grants.
Just a while back one Housing Association increased their total rents for people in their Sheltered Housing Scheme by over £13 per week.
So to hear the bleating from the Tories when trying to explain why these Financial Marauders are worth millions in bonuses, and then continuously taking off the poorest.
I read an article by an Indian Journalist in a National Paper this week that the Indians DON'T WANT, DON'T NEED, our huge donations anymore. There is huge affluence in India (weekly new Millionaires) and the fact that the rich Indians ignore their poor, cannot be our concern anymore. In fact this newspaper article went on to point out how Indian Tycoons are buying up the hugely profitable companies in the UK.
So are our blind or ignorant politicians going to wait until more of our elderly have to get in the lengthening soup/food queues? They (Politicians) ARE ALRIGHT JACK.

Sorry Harvey, but the beauty of this site is you don't have to read what
displeases you.

On reflection I have to say my rant (I agree) meant no criticisms against our children's educational or pleasure use of the Hive.
I would ask Murray to take away my posting to save the Tories and anti-Older people from any further distress.

Iain Paul uses the expression the “latest steps on the Hive’s journey to completion”. May I suggest the journey continues onwards to the oasis of glare that is Las Vegas where it will blend seamlessly with other similarly garish monstrosities? To me it looks like a mutant egg-box, not a hive; though I do hope that those who eventually use it will be able to thrive on the nutritious nectar within.
