A service of remembrance and commemoration dedicated to mothers at a Worcester cemetery will be the first of its kind.

Worcester City Council’s crematorium chapel in Astwood Cemetery will host the Mothering Sunday event on Sunday at 3pm to allow people to pay tribute to lost loved ones. Phil Burton, the council’s bereavement services manager, said: “Mothering Sunday is one of the busiest days of the year at the cemetery. A lot of people visit their mothers’ graves and bring flowers as a mark of remembrance.

“The service will give them an opportunity to come together on this special day for mums.

“There will be many people here and they may be drawn to the service while they are visiting the cemetery.

“Everyone is welcome to turn up on the day and join in the service, which is free of charge.”

It is expected to last for about an hour and will be conducted by Reverend Peter Haddleton, vicar of St Barnabas Church.

People going to the service can sign a book of remembrance. Anyone who is unable to attend but would like a name included, can e-mail the details to friends ofastwood@gmail.com by Saturday.

Pam Hinks, secretary of the Friends of Astwood Cemetery, said if the service proved successful a similar one could be held for Father’s Day in June.
