A STREET drinker who has 97 offences on his record has been arrested shortly after leaving prison.

Peter Swinbourne, aged 40, of the YMCA in Henwick Road, Worcester, pleaded guilty to breaching an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo).

The latest breach comes after Swinbourne was jailed for 18 weeks on Wednesday, January 4, for the 16th breach of his Asbo, just five days after being released from a prison sentence for the last breach.

Mark Dodson, prosecuting, told the court that at about 8.30pm on Wednesday, March 7, an officer was called to the front desk to deal with a drunk male.

He said: “Peter Swinbourne was lying on the floor and said he wasn’t going anywhere. When officers tried to lift him he began violently swinging his arms around and nearly knocked the officers around him.

“He did this several times as they attempted to lift him up. Officers reported he was clearly drunk.

“At about 8.45pm he was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. When he was told this he became co-operative.”

Simon Deeley, defending, said Swinbourne visited the police station to report that his rucksack and sleeping bag had been stolen.

He said: “The original offence he was arrested for was the offence of drunk and disorderly, which is not an imprisonable offence.

“He has an ingrained alcohol problem and has been an alcoholic for 20 years. He was grateful none of the officers were struck.

“He is now 40 years old and he says he has had enough. He is trying to seek some help and had an appointment on Wednesday at St Paul’s Hostel.”

Magistrates decided to defer sentencing until May 10 to give Swinbourne the chance to prove he had changed. He was told: “When you come back you must provide evidence you have been attending alcohol rehabilitation”.
