A FLAT was evacuated after a fire broke out in the store room of a bookmakers in the Warndon area of the city last night.

Two engines from Worcester attended the incident at William Hill, in Cranham Drive, at about 9.45pm after smoke was seen coming out of the premises.

Firefighters using breathing apparatus, one hose reel and a covering jet tackled the fire and evacuated the first floor maisonette due to smoke logging.

The shop floor was also heavily smoke logged and positive pressure ventilation was used to clear the building and the blaze was under control by about 10.28pm.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

No one was injured during the incident although there was significant smoke damage in the kitchen area of the bookmakers.

Station Commander Daryl Justice from Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Thankfully the fire was noticed in its early stages and crews worked quickly and effectively to bring it under control in less than an hour.”
