A MALVERN musician is gearing up to spend three months volunteering in the East African nation of Tanzania.
Sam Walter will be working at an arts centre, the Tanzania House of Talent, which trains young people in music, dance and theatre. Many of its graduates have gone on to become well-established artists, musicians and choreographers.
Mr Walter was selected for the role through Skillshare, an international volunteering and development charity.
He has spent the last two years performing folk songs at festivals and venues all around the country, singing on stage and busking.
Last year he travelled to south India with Raleigh International, building toilets and digging trenches to prevent elephants ruining villagers’ crops.
During his visit he befriended a travelling musician and learned some basic Indian ragas and voice yoga, which he is keen to teach in Tanzania, alongside English folk songs.
“I’m sure it will be a fascinating experience. I’m really looking forward to it,” he said.
Mr Walter has recorded a song about his visit to Africa which can be found by searching for Sam’s Skillshare fund-raising song on YouTube.
Donations to fund his visit, which starts in April, can be made at justgiving.com/SamTHT
