WORK is underway to transform one of Worcester’s most prominent buildings into a popular Italian restaurant.

The grade two listed building at 106 High Street, which formerly housed the Portman Building Society, has been bought by the Zizzi’s chain.

The move, which includes a glass extension to the back of the building, has been welcomed by local businesses who believe it will benefit business and enhance the local area.

Gabrielle Bullock, from Bygones of Worcester in College Street, Worcester, said the development of the building, particularly the side facing the Deansway, would improve the entrance to the High Street and benefit other businesses in the locality.

In her letter, she said: “For many years this blank wall has presented an unattractive face to the entrance to the High Street.

“The new design is stylish and sympathetic. I believe that the use of the building as a restaurant is appropriate and will be beneficial to other businesses in the area.”

Harrison Clark Solicitors, based at 5 Deansway, said they also believed the planning application would “enhance this area of the city centre”, as did Rabjohns in College Yard. Their spokesman said: “The development will provide a vibrant use for a significant property in the area, as well as providing much needed employment.”

Adrian Field, manager of Worcester BID, welcomed the arrival of the popular chain.

He said: “We are delighted that Worcester continues to be seen as a great location for a company such as Zizzi’s to invest in.

“They have clearly seen the potential that the city has to offer to them.

“We are delighted that this provides yet another quality dining experience following on from the opening or soon to be openings of Browns Wine Bar and the Quay in South Quay, the Olive Branch in Church Street, and the Pavilion in the Park in Cripplegate Park.”

Zizzi’s said it was not yet able to give an opening date or an estimate on the number of jobs it intended to create at the new restaurant.
