A man from the West Midlands was seriously injured and another man killed in a motorway crash on the border with Worcestershire and Gloucestershire involving five vehicles.

Two lorries, two vans and a car were involved in the incident between junctions 8 and 9 of the M5 near Tewkesbury.

A 46-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, who was driving one of the lorries, was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

Gloucestershire Police said the accident happened on the northbound carriageway.

A passenger in one of the vans, a 22-year-old man from Batley in West Yorkshire, was taken to Worcester Royal Hospital but died shortly after arrival.

The driver of the same van, a 27-year-old from Mirfield, West Yorkshire, was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham with serious injuries.

A police spokeswoman said: "Witnesses to the collision that haven't yet spoken to police are asked to contact Gloucestershire Constabulary on telephone number 101, quoting incident number 444 of May 1.

The motorway was closed to allow for a full investigation but has reopened.
