A man who died after a motorway crash has been named as Steven Cracknell.

Mr Cracknell died, aged 22, after a crash involving two lorries, two vans and a car.

Mr Cracknell, from Batley in West Yorkshire was freed from his van by emergency crews and taken to Worcestershire Royal Hospital where he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival.

Two other men were seriously hurt in the crash which happened on the northbound carriageway of the M5 near to Junction 8 at Strensham at about 9.15pm on Tuesday, May 1.

A ambulance, a rapid response vehicle, two senior paramedic officers, a paramedic area support officer, the Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), three medics and a MERIT Trauma doctor from West Midlands Ambulance Service were sent to the scene, together with an ambulance from Great Western Ambulance Service, police and firefighters from Upton, Worcester, Droitwich and Gloucestershire.

The driver of the van, a 27-year-old from Mirfield, West Yorkshire, had been thrown from the vehicle and sustained significant head and chest injuries.

He remains in a critical but stable condition at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

A 46-year-old man from Stoke-on-Trent, who was driving one of the lorries, suffered multiple leg and pelvic injuries and was trapped in the cab.

He was freed and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham where he is stable but with injuries desribed as “potentially life-changing injuries”.
