A photograph of a scarce Worcestershire butterfly is the overall winner of an annual photography competition run by the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust.

More than 130 spectacular pictures were entered into the competition, which required photographers to focus their efforts on the charity’s nature reserves.

The winners’ pictures will feature in the Trust’s 2013 calendar, which raises funds to conserve wildlife.

Wendy Carter, the trust’s communications manager, said: “Once again we’ve been impressed by the quality of photographs.

“This is the third consecutive year we’ve run the competition and each year it gets harder and harder to pick just 12 winning images.”

Each month of the calendar features an A4 print of the winning photograph and two smaller runners-up images.

This year, the front cover image is a pearl-bordered fritillary butterfly taken in the Wyre Forest by Jason Curtis of Far Forest, which also features for May. Mr Curtis’ picture of a common toad at Knowles Coppice nature reserve was used for March.

Ruth Bourne, from Droitwich, took berries at Lower Smite Farm for December, while Paul Lane, from St John’s, Worcester, took a picture of the Granary at Lower Smite Farm for April.

Bob Tunstall, from Worcester, photographed an emperor dragonfly at Lower Smite Farm for July, while Dave Butler, from Worcester, has his picture of a common spotted orchid at Eades Meadow nature reserve on the page for June.

Other winners include Stuart Andrews, of Bromsgrove, Gethin Thomas from Redditch, Tony Ellis of Stourbridge, Bas Yates, of Inkberrow, Tim Ellis, of Stourport on Severn and Melvyn Dodd of Kingswinford.
