SIR – Living at Homenash House I was able to see the torchbearer as he passed St George’s Square in Worcester.

I am living with Parkinson’s but hope to enter the Acorns Triple Run in June, albeit the 1km run.

On Thursday evening, however, I was crippled with a terrible chest infection.

I was unable to speak at times and had lost most of my energy.

Despite that I had a good view and was fairly comfortable because I had a picnic chair.

Seeing my predicament a thoughtful car passenger provided me with an umbrella to provide shade from the sun and I would like to thank her for this kind gesture.

When the barriers were set up, I started to feel better so was able to loan my chair to a gentleman in far greater need than me.

The torch was late but who cared? The police, as usual, did a marvellous job. There seemed to be 100s, but why is it that when you want one you can’t find one ?

The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed themselves.

When I was at school in 1948 three of ours boys (through a local athletic club) were torchbearers.

Had I been a year older it could have been me.

However, 2012 has made up for that and I wish all competitors well and bearing in mind your comment (Worcester News, May 22) to remember that the important thing is not winnnig but taking part.
