SIR – The news that Worcestershire County Council is proposing to put a cap on all new and updated applications for adult social care is extremely worrying, particularly as the council’s own consultation process highlighted that social care was viewed by the people of Worcestershire as the most important area to protect.
It is likely to result in some disabled people who are currently active in their communities being forced into care homes if this was the cheaper option.
Numerous groups concerned with social care have condemned the proposals, describing them as “retrogressive” and an abandonment of the right “to be socially included rather than ghettoised or institutionalised”. The small amount of money that the council expects to save seems insignificant when compared with the social disruption it could cause. The poorly advertised consultation process will continue until the end of July, and I hope that all concerned people will express their opinions to the council, either at these events or via the council website.
The next consultation is today from 2-3pm at Perdiswell Young People’s Leisure Club.
