A WOMAN has described how she watched in horror as flood water tore through a Welsh caravan park where she owns a site.

Lynda Jarvis, of Whitbourne, near Worcester, had only returned home from her caravan in Glanlerry Caravan Park, near Glanwern, Borth, north of Aberystwyth, on Thursday, and was visiting friends in Bedford on Saturday when she received call from her daughter at about 8am.

Mrs Jarvis said she was “devastated” watching the footage on the news channel and was worried for the safety of her friends and family, as her cousins were still staying on the site.

Fortunately, she called her cousins and got through straight away and they told her they were safe at the local lifeboat station.

The 64-year-old, who previously lived in Worcester, visited the caravan park yesterday with her husband and fortunately no damage had been caused to the inside of their caravan or a metal storage bunker they keep outside.

But she said: “It was devastating then because we didn’t know what damage had been done.

"We went down today because we didn’t know what to expect.

“My cousin was evacuated.

“I don’t know which was worse, being there or being here and not knowing and having family there.

“When I put the TV on I just had a weight in my stomach.

"It wasn’t just the thought of losing the caravan, it was the thought of friends and family. It was scary.”

But she said the caravan park was fortunately the least hit within a half-mile radius and the main damage was caused to people’s gardens, with lights and decorations being washed away.

However, it could have been a very different story.

“The reason they were told they were being evacuated was because a high tide was coming up,” said Mrs Jarvis.

“But as the water came over the bank it found itself in a ditch and drained itself before the high tide came.

“If it hadn’t drained off, it would have been much worse. It wasn’t as devastating to see as we thought, which was a relief.”

There are currently no flood warnings for Worcestershire.
