CIVIC dignitaries welcomed the new mayor of Worcester in a procession and service at the cathedral.

Mayor of Worcester Roger Berry and his mayoress Jill were accompanied by former Worcester mayors and chairmen and mayors from neighbouring councils.

Also present was Lord Faulkner of Worcester, the Honorary Recorder Judge Juckes, and representatives from the police and fire service.

City community groups, support groups, local clubs, charities, schools and businesses were also invited.

The procession yesterday walked from the Guildhall along the High Street to Worcester Cathedral for a 10.30am service conducted by Canon David Stanton.

Readings were given by Deputy Lieutenant of Worcestershire, David Williams-Thomas and the new mayor himself.

The Reverend Canon John Everest, chaplain to the mayor, led prayers for the city and for its new mayor and mayoress.

“May the numerous engagements they undertake help to hold together the different communities within the city,” he said.

“May their civic leadership help the council to continue working with the needs for the whole community in mind.”

Dignitaries then returned to the Guildhall for refreshments following the service.

Councillor Berry said he was delighted with the turnout.

“It’s really pleasing that so many friends have been able to come and welcome me. It’s a really excellent turnout.

“I am very honoured to have been chosen as mayor of Worcester.

"I will work hard to promote the interests of local people and promote our wonderful city.

“My two charities are for single, homeless people and I hope to highlight the need for accommodation for people in the county and bring communities together during my time in office.”
