Man killed by train in rush-hour rail horror

A MAN died after being hit by a train as it travelled through Worcester.

The man’s body was discovered on the railway line near the city’s London Road yesterday morning.

The incident was reported at 8.54am by the driver of the 8.26am First Great Western service from Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington.

That train came to a halt between the city’s London Road and Lark Hill Road bridges.

British Transport Police and West Mercia Police were called to the line near to Lark Hill Road after receiving a report of a body on the tracks.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said the man had been pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was initially believed the man had injuries consistent with having fallen from a height but after officers viewed CCTV from the front of the 0826hrs Worcester Foregate Street to London Paddington service, it emerged the man was struck and killed by this train,” he said.

“The incident, which was reported to BTP at 8.54am by the driver of the train, is being treated as non-suspicious.

“Officers are working to establish the man’s identity and inform next of kin.”

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford, an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle to the scene.

Normal services resumed by 10.30am yesterday.
