THE career of a larger-than-life Worcester tribute act is getting bigger and better after impressing the audience of a popular entertainment show.

Heavyweights of pop Take Fat scooped the top prize of £25,000 on Sky 1’s Don’t Stop Me Now with their faithful reproduction of hit after hit, all laced with a fine line in comedy.

Gary Lardo, Jason Chocolate Orange, Howard McDonalds, Mark Growin and Blobbie Williams hit the screens on Sunday when presenter Amanda Byram was joined by celebrity guest and Radio One DJ Chris Moyles.

Blobbie said they had only two opportunities to dazzle, with the first appearance limited to 100 seconds and the second giving only a minute to shine. “We are really chuffed to have won the show and we’re getting a lot of people contacting us, the diary is filling up nicely. It’s fabulous publicity.

“For the last few years we have been ticking over but I think we are right on the edge of something.

“We treated ourselves a little bit and put some money back into the band for backdrops and videos for live performances.”

The fate of performers in the rapid-fire, high-stakes programme was decided by the audience who, at the press of a button, could send them reeling through a wall, falling through trap doors or up in smoke.

There could be further appearances for the band on the television screen, this time in their own sitcom with filming for a pilot episode set to take place soon.

“We are really looking forward to that. It’s four fat blokes and a small person living in a house as Take Fat and we are all larger than life,” said Blobbie.

They are no strangers to the limelight with Blobbie starring on Deal Or No Deal and winning Come Dine With Me, as well as the group appearing on CBBC’S The Slammer and ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent.

They are set to appear at Guilfest in Guildford, Surrey, alongside the likes of Olly Murs and Tim Minchin from Friday to Sunday, July 13-15.
