A COUNTY councillor is urging Malvern people to come to a public meeting this week to save land around the town's youth centre in Albert Road North.

Management of the centre, now called Malvern Cube, was transferred last year from Worcestershire County Council to Malvern Youth and Community Trust after a closure threat. The trust was granted a 30-year lease on the building, but not on most of the surrounding land.

Now Coun Penelope Morgan is calling on local people to put pressure on the council Not to sell the land off for development.

She said: "Part of the land has already been promised to South Worcestershire College to support their need to expand their courses but calls for the rest to be included with the lease for the building have fallen on deaf ears and the only offer, to allow the people of Malvern to buy the land, is a derisory one.

"The asking price, set by the council, is double the market rate estimated by local estate agents John Goodwins and assumes that the land has planning permission for executive houses, which it does not.

"Unless something is done soon this will become yet another Malvern green space given over to developers."

The meeting is at the Malvern Cube on Wednesday, June 27, at 7.30pm.
