GREEN-fingered city residents are being reminded to dust off their trowels, dig out their seeds and compost, and start planting to ensure they can harvest their fruit and vegetables in time for the seventh annual Worcester City Flower Show.

The event is being held in Gheluvelt Park on Saturday, August 18.

With 93 classes ranging from flowers and floral decorations to handicrafts and photography, there is something for everyone, including children and teenagers up to the age of 15.

The show has grown from strength to strength since it was first held in Cripplegate Park in 2006 – thanks to the efforts of the Friends of Cripplegate Park.

The first show attracted 120 entries in 33 classes, eight stalls and two societies.

It transferred to Gheluvelt Park in 2010, and last year there were 900 entries in 90 classes with more than 20 stalls and five societies, as well as children’s entertainment including a carousel and bouncy castle.

Michelle Newell, city council park warden and member of the show organising committee, said: “The aim is to inspire people of all ages to make, grow or create things that reflect the best of Worcester – using flowers, fruit and vegetables or through cakes and preserves, handicrafts and photography.”

The Friends of Gheluvelt and Worcester City Council, with funding from Community Spaces, will present Fitness in the Park.

It is a new family event for this year and will include bands and musicians, exercise to music, Zumba, line-dancing and the opportunity to use the park’s gym and table tennis facilities.

The show will also have craft and food stalls.

Visitors can learn more about composting and recycling at the Pump House Environmental Centre and get advice from the horticultural societies.

They are the local branches of the bonsai, fuschia, orchid, cactus, chrysanthemum and dahlia and hostea societies, as well as the Worcestershire fungi group, Shropshire Sarracenias and the Worcester Bee Keepers.

Anyone interested in entering the competitions can obtain a notice of the schedule from the website at worcester.gov.uk/ flowershow, or collect a copy from various locations around Worcester.
