A WORCESTER man fears he may never be able to play his favourite sports again after a taxi drove over his leg following a night out in the city centre.

Samuel Campbell was punched in the face twice in an unprovoked attack outside takeaway Shakeeys in Angel Street during a night on the town with his brother and friend.

The 22-year-old then fell into the road and was hit by a passing taxi which drove over his leg and ankle in the early hours of June 25, before it drove off.

Police are anxious to speak to the driver of the black seven-seater and think that he may not have known he had hit someone.

Mr Campbell, of Fairmount Road, Brickfields, who also has type one diabetes, suffered a fractured fibula and had 42 pins and two metal plates inserted into his left leg in a four-hour operation.

But after being discharged from Worcestershire Royal Hospital more than a week ago he still suffers with headaches and is in constant pain.

“I’m just in absolute agony,” he said. “I’ve woken up every night in pain. I’m just so annoyed.

"I do mixed martial arts and boxing as a hobby and the doctor said I won’t be able to do it again now.

"I’m going to have 20-inch scars either side of my leg and the metal plates in my leg forever.

“He [the taxi driver] should have stopped and called the ambulance. My little brother had to carry me out of the road. He should have just stopped. It was quite a big impact.”

Toby Shergold, West Mercia Police spokesman, said: “We would like to talk to the taxi driver involved.

“It may be that he drove off without knowing he had been involved in a collision and carried along Angel Street.

“If anyone has got any information they should contact the non-emergency number 101 quoting reference 51 S 26/06/12.”
