WORCESTER businesses braved the drizzly weather over the weekend to take part in the Great British Summer Event.

Although it was unseasonably wet, people still enjoyed the event hosted by Worcester Business Improvement District (BID), which saw activities and stalls laid out at South Quay and in the city centre.

In the run-up to the weekend a window-dressing competition also took place with 36 Worcester businesses taking part.

Organisers and judges of the competition met on Saturday morning to award the winning shop Cornocopia their trophy.

Kirsten Linton, who owns the gift shop, designed the window with shop assistant Rebecca Endacott as a British camping scene using a tent designed as a VW Polo camper van.

“It took around a day to put together,” she said. “The reaction to the display has been great. We are really pleased.”

The theme of the competition was red, white and blue, and the organisers said they were pleased so many people had got involved.

Adrian Field, Worcester BID manager, said: “Both retailers and offices throughout the city centre took part in the event, which is great. The quality of entrants has been really good. The event as a whole has gone really well.

“There’s been a great atmosphere and lots of people have come out to enjoy everything going on.”

Cookmate in Broad Street and Multi York in Pump Street were alongside Cornucopia as the top three window displays and five other shops were given gold awards.
