THE Girl Guiding movement in Malvern is celebrating a triple whammy of Olympic involvement.
Last week, 16-year-old Sophie Witherford, a member of 5th Malvern Link Rangers, proudly represented the organisation as she carried the Olympic Torch through Alcester in Warwickshire. But the involvement does not stop there, as two more members of the movement are looking forward to travelling to London to serve as Games Makers – volunteer helpers – for the London 2012 event.
Callie Halliday, a senior section member and unit helper with 5th Malvern Link Guides, will be helping at Lee Valley with the canoe slalom, as well as in the Olympic Village.
Callie, who is in the England and GB Development canoeing squads and is heading to Prague for training straight after her stint at the games, said: “It’s great to be involved, especially in my own sport.” Also playing a part will be Division Commissioner Patricia Robinson, who will be working in the entertainments team in Olympic Park as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
She said: “I am really excited to be in the main park helping to facilitate some of the talent that will be performing.”
